After sitting for nearly a decade, my Corvette fired up with its ancient fuel—but ran terribly. A full refresh was in order. First, I replaced the fuel, followed by an oil change using Penrite’s recommended 20W-60 grade for Australian conditions. Then came an unexpected setback: just 300 meters into a test drive, a loud pop and rough engine had me thinking the worst. Luckily, the culprit turned out to be a snapped oxygen sensor—an easy fix with a VN Commodore part. Next, I tackled the brakes, flushing out decades-old fluid that was more sludge than liquid. With each fix, the Corvette edged closer to roadworthiness. Now, only the elusive 255/50r16 tyres stand between me and the next milestone.

Fixing The Gauge Cluster On My C4 Corvette
One of the first things I noticed when I got my C4 Corvette was that the gauge cluster wasn’t working. Instead of reading actual values, it lit up like a Christmas tree. After some research, I realized it wasn’t an expensive fix—just a matter of replacing the faded polarizing filter on the LCD. The process involved carefully dismantling the cluster, scraping off the old filter, applying a new one, and tackling the challenge of reapplying the graphics. I experimented with Cricut-cut vinyl but ran into issues with hollow numerals, so I plan to try laser-printed adhesive vinyl next time. Reassembling the cluster took patience, but most of the LCD elements now display correctly, with a few lingering issues likely due to worn elastomeric connectors.
Reconditioning The Front Interior Dome Light In My 380SEC
After years of dealing with a finicky front interior dome light in my 380SEC, I finally decided to tackle the issue. A careful teardown revealed dirty electrical terminals and a few misplaced components—including a tiny ball bearing my daughter luckily spotted. With some cleaning, soldering, and strategic reassembly, the switch now functions flawlessly, clicking firmly into place. Reinstalled in the car, the light works exactly as it should—no more pressing or fiddling required!

However, the job is on hold until I source the correct parts, delaying my participation in the Sydney German Autofest.
