Unfortunately due to time constraints I wasn’t able to do the complete service on the M109r in 1 go. I did the spark plugs first then came back a couple of weeks later to do the oil change.
The biggest issue I had with the oil change was that whoever previously did it over tightened everything. This meant I had to pull out a breaker bar to undo the sump plugs (there’s 2) and also that the oil filter was jammed so extremely tight that I couldn’t undo it using conventional methods.
After trying out regular methods and making zero progress I made the decision to cave man it. That mean beating a screw driver into the side of the filter and using that as a lever to undo it.
Of course this all could have been avoided if they used an aftermarket K&N filter. Notice how the K&N filter has a bolt head on the top of it? This means it can be undone with a regular spanner and even if it’s over tightened it’s much easier to remove.
Once it was all done, I refilled the oil – it was well overdue for a change. Take a look at how dark it was.
A short test ride followed and it was running great. An unexpected side effect is how much smoother the gear changes now are – the notoriously rough shift to 2nd gear is now smooth even without preloading the gearbox.
